UMass Boston’s Dining Commons has earned 4 Star Certified Green Restaurant® status by implementing 63 environmental steps to earn 309.53 GreenPoints™. The Dining Commons composts food waste and recycles plastics, glass, aluminum, cardboard, and paper to keep up to 90% of its waste out of landfills. This dining hall also significantly reduces its energy usage by having Energy Star appliances, including ovens, a dishwasher, fryers, and an undercounter refrigerator, which are 30%-40% more efficient than conventional models. To further save energy, UMass Boston’s Dining Commons uses occupancy sensors in its restrooms and offices, which reduce electricity usage in these areas by approximately 60%.
