Harvard University Dining Services Saves Over 2.5 Million Gallons of Water Annually

All 12 of Harvard University Dining Services’ undergraduate dining halls have earned Certified Green Restaurant® certification from the Green Restaurant Association. In addition to their undergraduate dining halls, 4 of HUDS graduate dining halls have earned certification, including SEC Cafe, Harvard Law School Cafe, Harvard Kennedy School Cafe, and Sebastian’s Cafe.

HUDS has been working with the GRA since 2013 to make their locations as sustainable as possible. In total, HUDS has taken over 800 environmental steps to earn more than 3,400 GreenPoints™. HUD’S environmental steps are saving 872,450 kWh of electricity annually, the equivalent of 130.1 passenger vehicles off the road for one year. In addition, Harvard University Dining Services saves 2,559,900 gallons of water annually, enough to fill 234.7 backyard swimming pools. HUDS is also taking steps to prevent 1,175,000 of their dining halls’ waste from ending up in the landfill every year.
